A nagykanizsai állomásról: A városnak az az 1861-ben átadott épületegyüttese, ami elkészültekor az ország egyik legforgalmasabb pályaudvara volt. A Déli Vasút három legnagyobb pályaudvarát, így a nagykanizsait is Carl Schlimp tervei alapján építették. A közülük elsőként elkészült nagykanizsai pályaudvaron minden kocsiosztály utasát külön-külön váróterem fogadta, ugyanakkor az épületben megoldották az induló és az érkező utasok szétválasztását. A forgalom jobb lebonyolítása érdekében csarnokot építettek az első négy vágány fölé. Az 1861-ben átadott épületegyüttesben a vonatfogadó csarnok csatlakozott az állomás épületéhez. A fából készült és díszes vaselemekkel stabillá tett csarnokot azonban 1940-ben rossz állapota miatt lebontották. A vasútállomás épülete az 1950-től végzett folyamatos bővítés és felújítás után nyerte el mai arculatát. 1996-ra készült el az első 4 vágány magas peronja. Azonban ha ellátogatsz az állomásra, készülj fel, hogy a korai dicsfényből nem sokat fogsz látni. Annak ellenére, hogy ez egy máig működő intézmény, amolyan szellemjárta helynek tűnik az elhagyatott épületeivel, csődbe ment üzlethelyiségeivel, sötét halljaival. De ha látni akarod, milyen volt az állomás, mikor Kanizsán még virágzott a kereskedelem, ugorj be a "kultúrváróba" és nézd meg a vasúrtól szóló állandó kiállítást!

Why this cache came to exist: For non-Hungarian cachers it needs some explanation. Every nation has its folk songs and children's songs known, sung and loved by the population of the whole country. A favorite of Hungarians is "Megy a gőzös", which is about a locomotive train travelling to Nagykanizsa. The translation goes as follows:

About the station: The railway station of Nagykanizsa was one of the most crowded stations of the country at the time of its construction (1861). It was designed by Carl Schlimp. Each passenger class had its own waiting room, and passengers of incoming and leaving trains were also using different facilities. A hall was built over the first four tracks to manage traffic better, however, the hall - made of wood and stabilized by ornated iron elements - was demolished in 1940 because of its bad condition. The building of the railway station has gained its present image by its continuous expansion and renovation from 1950 on, with the finishing touch in 1996: the high platform of the first four tracks.The building is under local protection. However, when you visit the station, be prepared to find a much less glorious place. Despite the fact that it still provides services to the public, it seems like a typical "Lost place" of Geocaching with its empty buildings, bankrupt shops and dark halls. But if you want to see the station in its former glory, check out the exhibition in the "Cultural waiting room" (opening from the main hall).
