The area of Armadale spans across northern Scarborough and southern Markham, bordered by 14th Avenue to the north, Tapscott Road to the east, McNicoll Avenue to the south, and Middlefield Road to the west. At the posted coordinates you will find the only remnant of the historical area, the Armadale Free Methodist Church, which is still operational to this day, offering Sunday worship It is boasted as the oldest continuing Free Methodist place of worship in Canada. The community's name was originally Magdala, but when the town applied for a post office in 1869, the name was not accepted. The origins of the name Armadale go back to a village in Scotland; where many of the founders of the town are believed to have immigrated from.

What was once a very busy and prominent area with 2 blacksmith shops, a brickyard, several farms, a general store, Temperance hotel, and a tavern; began to fade away after 1871 when the Toronto and Nipissing Railway was built and by-passed the town. The last of the town closed in 1917, the post office, when rural mail delivery was introduced.

Archaeological excavation efforts by the University of Toronto and the Royal Ontario Museum have unearthed various indigenous artifacts, supporting the idea that this was a prominent area even prior to European settlement.
