Johnny Mize was born in Demorest and played baseball for Piedmont College before a storied career as a Major League first baseman. During his career with the Cardinals, Giants, and Yankees, he had 2011 hits, 359 home runs, and 1337 RBI's. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.
