Una chiesa a Piazza Armerina molto antica è la chiesetta di S. Maria del Soccorso che è stata donata all’Ordine dei Cavalieri dell’Ospedale di Gerusalemme. Nel 1420 la chiesa fu trasformata in Commenda dei Cavalieri di Malta e il compito dei militari divenne quello di amministrare i beni dell’Ordine e propagandare la religione degli Ospedalieri fra la cittadinanza piazzese al fine del reclutamento. La struttura è un magnifico esempio di architettura normanna ma si distinguono i due portali in stile gotico. Al suo interno troviamo una pianta rettangolare con un’unica nvata coperta da capriate in legno che finisce con un’abside semicircolare sormontata da una bellissima semicupola.

A very old church in Piazza Armerina is the small church of S. Maria del Soccorso which was donated to the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of Jerusalem. In 1420 the church was transformed into Commendam of the Knights of Malta and the task of the military became that of administering the goods of the Order and propagating the religion of the Hospitallers among the citizens of Piazzale for the purpose of recruitment.
The structure is a magnificent example of Norman architecture but the two gothic style portals stand out. Inside there is a rectangular plan with a single nvata covered with wooden trusses that ends with a semicircular apse surmounted by a beautiful semi-dome.
