Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches along the Rosstown Rail train that extends from Elsternwick to Oakleigh railway station.

This is a new cache replacing the previous one here that was muggled. There are 11 caches in all - 9 traditional caches and a multi-cache at the Elsternwick end of the line. Some of the original caches have been archived.

Those caches that are left in the Rosstown Series are-

  • All Aboard Mr Bent.
  • Murrumbeena Turntable
  • Rosstown Railway caches -1, 2, 3.
  • Locomotion
  • Trainspotting cache
  • Junction II
  • Take a ticket Multi cache.

Princes Park used to be a wetland and then used as a rubbish landfill by the Caulfield Council until 1936. It is now a large multipurpose park with AFL oval and pavilion, soccer pitches, large dog-friendly area, super playground, tennis courts and the Armadale Bowls Club... ( and the home now of at least 2 caches)

The Rosstown railway line followed Dover Street after crossing Bambra Road just south of the position of this cache. There was a doubling of the track at this point, the purpose of which is uncertain. Close to this cache the footpath and night lighting looks like a long station - and it may be for the local train in the playground! So welcome to Princes Park Station now Platform 2. (version 2)

Destined never to be used but always a dream. William Murray Ross built the never to be used Rosstown Railway first in 1883 and then had to be redone in 1887-8 due to the shoddiness of the original build. It was to carry produce from his other failed venture in the area the sugar beet mill. ( the Northern Queensland Sugarcane industry would have probably ended its time anyway. ) There was a lot of concern from the market gardeners in the area that his mill would use all the water supply available in the area. The railway fell into disrepair quickly as did the sugar beet mill. Carnegie was known as Rosstown until the early 1900's but its namesake hotel still stands on Dandenong Road in Carnegie North. The railway would have been useful in today's age as it would have linked the Dandenong Line /go under the Frankston Line and eventually meet Sandringham Line at Elsternwick. Bus Route 625 follows closely a majority of the original route.

( FTF went to Bushfire and suscoe for the original cache.)

You are now looking for a concealed plastic tube container with log and pencil - no room for swaps - we'd like this one to last as this is the third installment so if muggles are around you might have to come back or choose your timing -Make sure the cover is stable when replaced.
