Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of caches which run between Ballymena and Glenarm on the Antrim coast.
The series contains a bonus cache. Clues, which are stuck to the inside of cache lids, need to be collected along the trail to enable you to get the Bonus Cache at the end. Not every container has a clue so watch out.

Dunaird Camp 8

On the National Cycle Route 97, just outside Broughshane this is the site of a Refugee Camp dating back to World War II.

In the early 1940's the population of Gibraltar was evacuated to the UK and other parts of the world. Initially the Refugees who came to the UK lived in England, but as the war progressed it was deemed too unsafe for them to stay in England, so they were shipped over to Northern Ireland.

Twelve camps were setup to house the Refugees, eight of which were in County Antrim.

These were :-

Camp 5 TAWNYBRACK (Near Moorfields)
Camp 6 MOORFIELDS
Camp 7 CASTLEGORE
Camp 8 DUNAIRD
Camp 9 DRUMMUCK
Camp 10 AGHACULLY
Camp 11 BRECKAGH BRIDGE
Camp 12 CORBY BRIDGE, RATHKENNY

Refugees were housed in these camps between 1944 and 1948. Families lived in Nissan Huts, a tin roofed basic structure, as it was thought they would not be staying for very long.

Cache is a preform tube with log only. There is off road car parking at the site.
