The town of Avalon was founded in 1882 by Richard Dempsey Yow, a Civil War POW, merchant, and politician who was described upon his death as "one of the most prominent citizens of northeast Georgia" by the Atlanta Constitution. At one point, Avalon had a school, post office, and train station.
Today, not much remains of Avalon as it was in Yow's day. The busiest spot in town is the Dollar General, a popular destination for folks who need a jug of milk but would rather not drive into Toccoa or Lavonia.
