Now for the Cache:
Willis became a community when the Great Northern Railroad decided to run a track from Houston to Chicago, and the Willis brothers donated their land in 1870 to the railroad.
In 1888, when co-education was rare, the Willis Male and Female College was founded.
The tobacco industry played a vital role in Willis' growth and development during that time. During the late nineteenth century the Willis area became the leading tobacco growing region in the state; before the lifting of the tariff on Cuban tobacco killed the boom in the early twentieth century, Willis supported as many as seven cigar factories.
As tobacco declined, a boom in the production of timber and agricultural products kept the town's economy thriving.
You will visit three historically important sites in Willis to learn information to determine the final coordinates as follows:
N 30 25.599
W095 28. ABC
At Stage 1, you will determine A = the third digit in the year shown in parentheses at the bottom of the information plaque that is attached to a brick standard, a year that documents the placement of the plaque
At Stage 2, you will determine B = the third digit of the year in which the site was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark.
At Stage 3, you will determine C = the number of cities in which awards were won in international competitions.
