I suggest looking at the description of this geocache in web view. It might even help to print it out.
The coordinates for this cache will require a walking tour of the statues in Geri Moulton Children’s Park in front of USA Women’s and Children’s hospital. Take the following tour and write down the answers found on the various sculptures. There are 27 questions. Number the answers as you get them and it will help with the formulas at the end. Then do the calculations to determine the actual coordinates to the geocache. The cache is on the hospital property.
This cache was placed around the time a local, 11-year-old girl found her ultimate healing in heaven when she died of DIPG cancer after spending much time at this hospital. She captured the hearts of many in Mobile, in Alabama, and all over the country. (Aubreigh’s Army, Lemon Face Challenge)
Information about the park can be found at www.usahealthsystem.com/childrenspark.
You will be required to walk across grass as you inspect the artwork but as the signs read, be respectful of the sculptures. Parking options are on either end of the park. Option 1 is to park in the first parking lot on the left as you enter the area. It is across from the Ronald McDonald House. Option 2 would be in the parking area in front of the hospital. If you park in Option 2, you need to begin with question 14.
BEGIN TOUR - The questions are not designed to be tricky, but some answers may be zero. You will be informed if you need to be more observant. If you park at the RMcD House, take the path south to the front of the property (toward Spring Hill Ave) to find the first stop where the kids are playing follow-the-leader on a log.
Q1. How many holes are in the dog’s collar past the buckle?
Q2. Now head back toward the rest of the park. You will find a girl wearing overalls with a pot in her right hand and a trowel in her left hand. How many flowers are in her back pocket?
Q3. Look for the girl who is coloring with her cat. How many crayons are there? Be careful with this one.
Q4. Now go past that first parking lot where you may have parked and find the circle of statues where the tug-of-war is taking place. At the “Puppy Love” statue, how many of the boy’s fingers are actually touching the girls back?
Q5. In the group that is playing tug-of-war, how many shoes are untied?
Q6. The boy who’s playing with the airplane has a letter on his right heel. What number letter is that in the alphabet? (where A is 1 and B is 2 etc.)
Q7. At the “Can I Keep Him?” statue - the shirtless boy holding a dog. How many collars is the dog wearing? (Be careful!)
Q8. Now find the two kids playing on the monkey bars - “Hanging Around”. How many belt loops are on the girls pants?
Q9. How many bows on the tail of the kite?
Q10. This statue is missing. The original question asked - How many ponytail holders are in the hair of the ballerina child? The name of that statue was called Anna’s First Plié. Although the statue is currently missing, the remaining plaque has the year that the statue was donated. What is the last digit of the year?
Q11. Turn left past the woman with the child on her shoulders toward the nearby building and go to the fountain. How many holes have water cascading downward in the fountain? Note: if there is little or no water in the fountain, count all of the holes where water should be falling. (count both levels; the answer is a multiple of 5)
Q12. Head back down to the path where the giraffes are. There are two giraffes; how many legs are being touched by their tails?
Q13. Where the frogs and lily pads are squirting water, how many snails are on the front of the statue?
Q14. Head north toward the hospital (USA W&C) to the three big eared rabbits. How many carrots?
Travel back south toward the first parking lot but on the other side of the street. You will need to zig zag some through this section (This was to avoid having to minimize backtrack.)
Q15. The boy who is fishing with his dog has how many slingshots in his back pocket?
Q16. What is the last digit of the year on the delivery boy’s newspaper?
Q17. Go to the bear who is eating out of a log. How many fungi (mushrooms) are on the log? (near his left foot)
Q18. Go to the statue with the flag. How many stars are on the drum?
Q19. How many (human) feet are actually touching the lickety-split go kart?
Q20. At “The Good Book” statue (3 people reading), how many animals are on the left page of the book?
Turn to the right as you go up the hill.
Q21. How many flaps are on the back pockets of the violinist’s pants?
Q22. How many knots are in the rope where the boy is playing tug-of-war with his dog?
Q23. There is a girl reading a story to a younger girl and her stuffed animals. How many stuffed animals? (Be careful with this one)
Q24. The snail who is looking at books has the artist’s name on the back of it shell. It looks like she may have made 10 of these statues. What number is this one? ( __ /10)
Q25. In the statue "Snapshot" where several kids are posing for a picture, how many feet are touching the ground? (… or designed to be touching the ground. One foot is somewhat hovering over the ground some. It is the foot the girl is standing on. Count that foot.)
Q26. There is a girl in a dress holding a baby. How many bows are on the back of her dress?
Q27. The guitar player has how many teeth showing? (this is not a trick question. It is an obvious answer when you look.)
Now you are back across the street from the front parking lot. The coordinates to the physical cache can be determined using the following formulas. Be careful with the math symbols.
N 30° 41.ABC W 088° 4.DEF
A = Q1 + Q2 + Q3 - Q4 - Q5
B = Q6 - Q7 - Q8 - Q12
C = Q11 ÷ Q25
D = Q9 + Q10 + Q13 + Q14 - Q16
E = Q15 + Q17 + Q18 - Q19 - Q20
F = Q21 + Q22 + Q23 + Q24 - Q26 - Q27
On occasion GZ has a lingering muggle. Please be stealthy.
The cache is a large, camo pill bottle in a typical geocaching-type spot.
Woo Hoo! Ian’s Dad was the FTF!
