Geocache Description:

Orbiting the Planet - Jupiter

This series of caches is an attempt at showing the scale of our solar system. The Sun, or Sol, is the centre of our known system, and all bodies within orbit it, from the planets, asteroids, comets to the hundreds of dwarf planets. The Sun is MASSIVE, with a diameter of 1.39 million kilometres!

The dome of the defunct Planet Hollywood restaurant in Niagara Falls, Canada will represent the Sun. The Planet Hollywood dome is approximately 24m. Using this scale caches have been placed at appropriate distances away to represent the distance from the Sun. The Planet Hollywood dome/Sun is at 43.093046 and -79.070791 (right near the Rainbow Bridge).

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a giant planet with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two-and-a-half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined. Its diameter is 139822km, or 10% that of the Sun. Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen with a quarter of its mass being helium, though helium comprises only about a tenth of the number of molecules. It may also have a rocky core of heavier elements, but like the other giant planets, Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. Because of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). It has at least 79 known moons, but 4 have been known since first being observed by Galileo in 1610. One moon, Ganymede, is actually larger than Mercury.

At the scale of the Planet Hollywood dome representing our Sun, Jupiter would be 2.41 m in diameter (taller than you or I) and lie 13.43 km from our Sun.

All caches are small plastic containers containing log sheets only. Please bring your own writing utensil.
