AR_Spies Everywhere Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: From June 06, 2018 until March 06, 2019, Geocaching HQ conducted an Augmented Reality (AR) experiment. During that time, cache owners were allowed to submit Mystery Caches that required the finder to download and use an AR app to find the cache. The goal of the experiment was to see how the geocaching community would use AR technology. Cache owners placed more than 600 AR caches around the world!

Unfortunately, the AR apps which met HQ’s requirements for the experiment have been or are currently in the process of being discontinued. As a result, it is currently not possible for finders to have the AR experience that was originally intended. Therefore, HQ has decided to archive all active AR caches placed during the experiment period. We are respectfully requesting that all AR cache owners please remove the cache container and contents as soon as possible.

As technology evolves, we look forward to seeing how Augmented Reality might have future applications for geocaching. Thank you to all cache owners who participated in the experiment!

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

President Roosevelt established the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) by a Presidential military order on June 13, 1942.  The OSS collected and analyzed strategic information as well as coordinating propaganda, subversion, and espionage activities for the U.S. military.  The OSS invented and produced many kinds of spy tools, weapons, explosives, and poisons from basic to highly unusual.  The 13,000 personnel of the OSS worked in the U.S. and many foreign countries, including behind enemy lines.  Some of the personnel were famous before or after the war for things unrelated to espionage.  Dissolved by presidential order in 1945, many of the functions handled by the OSS eventually became part of the modern Central Intelligence Agency.

This simple AR geocache does not require disguise, explosives, or poison pills.  It does require the Metaverse app on your GPS enabled mobile device.  There are four missions to be performed in order.  For each mission you must meet your contact agent, provide the identity password based on an OSS military operation, and answer the agent’s question.  Questions may or may not be site specific.  When you successfully complete a mission, you will learn the next identity password.  The final agent will provide the cache coordinates.  Go to the posted coordinates and use the identity password MAGIC to begin your first mission.

In Metaverse, search for the group AR_Spies_Everywhere or use this QR code inside the app. The Metaverse group map view shows where to find all four agents. You must be within 30 meters of the agent's location to interact.
