Geocache Description:

ABOUT THE LOCATION:

Kastro (Greek: Κάστρο) is a small village in the interior of the Greek island of Thassos. It is believed to be the oldest village on the island. The village name comes from the old castle that existed here to protect the inhabitants (Kastro means "castle"). The village is located in the center of the island, at a height of 450–500 m above sea level. It can be reached from Limenaria on an asphalt road or from Theologos on a dirt road.

According to the 2011 census, the population of Kastro was 9. (SOURCE WIKIPEDIA)

THE CACHE:

This cache is designed to show you the beautiful and tranquil town of Kastro. The cache is located close to a little chapel on the foot of Kastro's main viewpoint. Please respect the area as sacred! After / or before you located the cache, you may want to check out the main church of the town. It is about 600 years old, but very well preserved and still serves for ceremonies every last Saturday of the months. If you want to gain entry, ask the friendly owner of the next door taverna for a key. He is always happy to give you a multilingual tour as well free of charge.

Enjoy this tranquil place a little off the beaten path!

PARKING: If you don't have a 4WD, it is best to park directly at the end of the asphalt road before the town. After a 5min walk, you reach the cache site.
