Geocache Description:

This event will take place along the southern section of Parkland Walk, beginning at Finsbury Park and ending at Highgate, between 10:00-12:00 on Saturday 15th September.

We will gather at 10:00 and set off at around 10:15. We will walk along the section, gathering litter as we go.

The walk is 3km long, not including the return journey - if you do not feel able to walk the whole distance, please feel free to join the event anyway - every effort helps!

This event will be in collaboration with The Friends of Parkland Walk, who have kindly agreed to loan litter pickers, rubbish bags and protective gloves.

The Parkland Walk is the longest Linear Nature Reserve in London, and follows the former railway line connecting Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace. For more information, see the website: https://www.parkland-walk.org.uk/

The walk is very popular, and so unfortunately attracts quite a lot of litter which is detrimental to the local fauna and flora.

The walk is rich in wild flowers, and is visited by wildlife, mainly birds and foxes but occasionally deer.

It also contains an area of rare acid grassland, which supports many plants that are dependant on acidic soil conditions such as "Sheep’s Sorrell".

As this is a CITO event, I strongly encourage the use of public transport to reach the event. The event begins close to Manor House tube station (Piccadilly), Finsbury Park rail station and tube (Piccadilly and Victoria), and Crouch Hill Overground station is not far off.

The event takes place during CITO week, so by attending you will earn a virtual souvenir to display on your profile.

Points to remember:

  • Full bags should be tied off and placed next to (not in) any litter bin along the walk for the council to collect.
  • There is a risk of finding drug paraphernalia (needles etc). These should not be touched, but please note the location for specialist disposal.
  • There is a possibility of encountering camps of rough sleepers, these should be left alone, although obviously-abandoned sleeping bags etc can be disposed of.
  • Please ensure that you do not block the path or impede users of the walk.
  • And obviously - avoid any damage to trees and plants.
