Yitzhak Edward Asner was born on November 15, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, the fifth and youngest child to Jewish Russian-born parents. He attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas where he acted in school productions, edited the school newspaper, and became an All-City tackle on the football team.
Asner has said about his childhood, "Kansas was a gentle place to grow up.".

He grew up working at his father's Kansas City junkyard in Kansas. The junkyard is still doing business as "Asner Iron & Metal" and is still owned by his family. He also worked on the assembly line for General Motors. Later, Ed served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

Ed appeared in small supporting roles in television in the 50s. He made his film debut in 1962, in the Elvis Presley vehicle Kid Galahad.



For the older crowd, Ed Asner is best known for his role as Lou Grant during the 1970s and early 1980s, on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series Lou Grant, making him one of the few television actors to portray the same leading character in both a comedy and a drama. In addition he made appearances as Lou Grant on two other shows: Rhoda and Roseanne.
You can see his desk and other props from the show at the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, Kansas.

The younger crowd will recognize Ed Asner for portraying Santa Claus in the comedy film Elf (2003) and its animated remake Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas (2014). In 2009, he starred as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's animated film Up.


He most recently in 2018 has the role of Johnny's stepdad in the YouTube Red Karate Kid sequel series, Cobra Kai.


Asner has also had an extensive voice acting career. J. Jonah Jameson on the 1990s animated television series Spider-Man (1994–98); Hoggish Greedly on Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990–95); Hudson on Gargoyles (1994–96); Jabba the Hutt on the radio version of Star Wars; Master Vrook from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel; and Roland Daggett on Batman: The Animated Series (1992–94).

Ed received an Emmy for his portrayal of Captain Davies in the ABC Mini Series Roots in 1977. In fact, Ed has won more Emmy Awards for performing than any other male actor (seven, including five for the role of Lou Grant). In 1996, he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. In 2001, Asner was the recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

While presenting set props to the Kansas Historical Museum in Topeka at a public ceremony in June 1991, Asner pleased the local crowd by announcing, "I would not be the actor I am today if I had not come from Kansas."
