La piccola edicola della Madonnina segna la fine della strada asfaltata e punto di partenza dei i sentieri che partono per le cime della Majella.
La strada che sale al Blockhaus è da qualche anno interdetta al transito degli autoveicoli a quota 1980 m nei pressi del Rifugio Bruno Pomilio e la vetta (dove è presente il pianoro del Blockhaus e la statua della Madonnina) è raggiungibile solo in bicicletta o a piedi.
Il termine "block-haus", (che in tedesco significa casa di sassi, vedi Blockhaus) fu coniato nel XIX secolo durante la lotta al brigantaggio da un comandante militare di origine austriaca che era di stanza con un plotone di bersaglieri sulla cima dove vi era costruito un fortino di pietra, durante il periodo post-Unità di'Italia, per cercare di frenare l'avanzata dei briganti.
L'ascesa del Blockhaus (2145 m s.l.m.), classificabile come salita appenninica lunga e con pendenze medie, risulta essere la salita asfaltata con il maggiore dislivello in Italia (2039 m) ed una delle più dure del Centro-Italia assieme a quella del Terminillo e del Gran Sasso (Campo Imperatore)

The small lodge of the Madonnina marks the end of the asphalt road and the starting point of the paths that depart for the peaks of the Majella.
The road that goes up to the Blockhaus has been blocked for a few years by vehicles at 1980 m near the Refuge Bruno Pomilio and the summit (where there is the Blockhaus plateau and the statue of the Madonnina) can only be reached by bike or on foot.
The term "block-haus", (which in German means stone house, see Blockhaus) was coined in the nineteenth century during the fight against brigandage by a military commander of Austrian origin who was stationed with a platoon of Bersaglieri on the top where a stone fort was built during the post-Unification period of Italy, to try to stop the advance of the bandits.
The rise of the Blockhaus (2145 m asl), classifiable as a long Apennine slope with medium slopes, is the asphalted climb with the largest difference in level in Italy (2039 m) and one of the hardest in Central Italy with that of Terminillo and Gran Sasso (Campo Imperatore)
