Geocache Description:

The cache is placed on the Creevy Shore Walk close to Kilbarron Castle in an area that the Kindhoof family visit frequently. The cache is named after the ruined castle at the location. Little remains today of the original castle, but you can still see some of the exterior and interior walls and, most notably, what is referred to locally as "the Hour Glass Wall". The castle has a long and illustrious history relating to the O'Donnell clan, the Uí Cléirighs (O'Clerys) and the Annals of the Four Masters, which Mrs Kindhoof learnt all about when she recently joined a fascinating "Heritage Walk" to the castle. We are delighted to learn that the Kilbarron Conservation Group has been awarded funds for the first phase of building work to shore up the distinctive Hour Glass Wall, with other phases in the pipeline.

We cannot hope to do justice to this history in this caching page, when others know so much more than us. Please visit the link below to find out more about the castle's past, the people who lived and studied there, how it might have looked in all its glory and to see how you can get involved in the next chapter of the history of the castle. Watch out for the annual Heritage Walk (August) and the Summer School (May) which all delve into and celebrate this incredible location and its associations.

Parking is available a short distance from the cache, and it is a short walk with great views along an easy to follow trail to the cache location. Note, this is a cliffside walk so care should be taken with young children, however it is not required to stray from the marked footpath. Also please note that the cache is situated outside the perimeter fence surrounding the castle so there is no need to enter the castle grounds to find the cache. Please pay close attention to the warning signs which are there for your safety. The cache is a small container containing only a logbook, so you will need to bring your own pencil.

Please replace as found and try to ensure it is replaced out of sight. TWEEZERS REQUIRED.

JULY 2023 UPDATE - the Creevy Clifftop walk is now fully re-opened as far as Kilbarron Castle. This is still a cliff top walk so don’t attempt at night, be extra careful with children as it is uneven and in fenced close to the edge of the cliffs. Terrain rating increased to 3.5, access at own risk. Please let me know if anyone has any issues.
