The steel sculpture of The Warrior by Tom Deko (PNG) is of traditional New Guinea imagery. Made in Walcha in 1998, this sculpture is No4 in the Open Air Gallery.
In 1996 Stephen King, a local farmer and sculptor, approached Walcha Council to create a fountain sculpture for McHatton Park. The decision to accept his offer led to the formation of the Walcha Arts Council to fascilitate an ongoing public art programme. The concept came to be known as the Open Air Gallery.
