L’histoire de l’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville

L’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville a été construite sur un site sacré dont l’origine remonterait à l’époque gallo-romaine. Il fut un temps où elle n’était qu’une simple chapelle funéraire. Dans le courant du VIIe siècle, on voyait également apparaître des édifices chrétiens ainsi qu’un temple païen. Ce dernier subit de nombreuses transformations pour finalement devenir l’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville. Les derniers travaux de restauration datent de 1998. Une partie a été financée par le département de la Seine-Maritime qui est l’actuel propriétaire du domaine abbatial. Certains fonds provenaient de pays européens.

L’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville n’a aucunement été épargnée par les guerres de religion. D’ailleurs, ce fut une période particulièrement sombre pour les moines qui y vivaient. Entre 1562 et 1570, elle s’est vue dépouillée de la majorité de ses richesses, mobilier et ornements inclus. Pire encore, elle fit l’objet d’une tentative d’incendie. L’habitation des moines, le domaine abbatial et le cloître ont été totalement ravagés.

Ses monuments et son architecture

L’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville en a conquis plus d’un par son architecture romane. À cet effet, il convient de préciser qu’elle a été quatre fois classée monument historique. En prime, elle a été inscrite au titre des monuments historiques en 1987. L’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville met en évidence cinq grandes structures toutes aussi spectaculaires les unes que les autres. Chacune vaut véritablement le détour.

A ne pas rater : le grand jardin

Initialement de style français (médiéval), le jardin de l’abbaye Saint-Georges de Boscherville se situe au dos du bâtiment monastique. Il a été reconstruit il y a de cela 20 ans pour s’adapter au goût des Français. Aujourd’hui, les touristes auront l’occasion d’apprécier un jardin à l’italienne à l’architecture remarquable. Quatre magnifiques terrasses se chevauchent pour former un paysage exceptionnel. À cela s’ajoutent 4 espaces habilement aménagés qui renferment un potager, au nord, et un vaste champ au sud. Ce dernier est destiné à la plantation de condiments et d’arbres fruitiers. On y trouve même une grande variété de plantes médicinales et aromatiques. Le tout est agrémenté par des bosquets ainsi que des parterres à couper le souffle.

L’église abbatiale

Longue de 70 mètres, l’église abbatiale fut érigée au XIIe siècle. Grâce à ses lignes épurées, son style décrit parfaitement l’architecture normande. La chapelle offre une vue spectaculaire sur la vallée de la Seine. C’est aussi l’emplacement idéal pour avoir une vue d’ensemble de l’abbaye et l’apprécier dans toute sa splendeur.

Le bâtiment monastique

Caractérisé par son style classique, le bâtiment monastique se retrouve parmi les monuments construits par les mauristes. Sa création date du XVIIe siècle. Son rez-de-chaussée accueille une  somptueuse salle de réception. Il comporte aussi des cuisines et les dortoirs sont situés à l’étage.

La salle capitulaire

La salle capitulaire est l’image même du style gothique normand. Depuis sa fondation en 1157, elle a conservé son état d’antan. Elle ne mesure que 16 mètres et pourtant elle renferme de nombreuses statues uniques en leur genre.

L’abbaye bénédictine

L’abbaye bénédictine et le domaine abbatial viennent compléter l’ensemble. Le dernier, en particulier, s’étend sur plusieurs hectares.

Ces horaires correspondent également aux horaires pour trouver la géocache.

Nul besoin de payer l'entrée des jardins, la géocache se situe en dehors des jardins.

Il y a des parkings dans tout le village, dont un juste devant l'entrée de l'abbaye, s'il n'y a vraiment plus de places, allez devant la mairie et l'école ou devant les terrains de foot (encore des parkings !)

The history of Saint-Georges de Boscherville abbey

The Abbey Saint-Georges de Boscherville was built on a sacred site whose origins date back to the Gallo-Roman era. There was a time when it was only a simple funerary chapel. In the course of the seventh century, there were also Christian buildings and a pagan temple. The latter undergoes many transformations to eventually become the Abbey Saint-Georges de Boscherville. The last restoration works date from 1998. Part was financed by the department of Seine-Maritime which is the current owner of the abbey domain. Some funds came from European countries.

The Abbey Saint-Georges de Boscherville has not been spared by the wars of religion. Moreover, it was a particularly dark period for the monks who lived there. Between 1562 and 1570, she was stripped of most of her wealth, including furniture and ornaments. Even worse, she was the subject of a fire attempt. The dwelling of the monks, the abbey domain and the cloister were totally ravaged.

Its monuments and architecture

The Abbey of Saint-Georges de Boscherville has conquered more than one by its Romanesque architecture. To this end, it should be noted that it has been listed four times as a historic monument. As a bonus, it was registered as a historic monument in 1987. The abbey of Saint-Georges de Boscherville highlights five large structures all equally spectacular. Each is worth the detour.

Must see : the large garden

Originally French (medieval) style, the garden of the Abbey Saint-Georges de Boscherville is located on the back of the monastic building. It was rebuilt 20 years ago to suit French tastes. Today, tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy an Italian garden with remarkable architecture. Four magnificent terraces overlap to form an exceptional landscape. Added to this are 4 skilfully landscaped spaces that enclose a vegetable garden to the north and a vast field to the south. The latter is intended for the planting of condiments and fruit trees. There is even a wide variety of medicinal and aromatic plants. The whole is embellished by groves as well as breathtaking beds.

The abbey church

70 meters long, the abbey church was erected in the 12th century. Thanks to its clean lines, its style perfectly describes the Norman architecture. The chapel offers a spectacular view of the Seine Valley. It is also the ideal location to have an overview of the abbey and enjoy it in all its splendor.

The monastic building

Characterized by its classical style, the monastic building is found among the monuments built by the Mauritians. Its creation dates from the seventeenth century. Its ground floor hosts a sumptuous reception room. There are kitchens and dormitories are located upstairs.

The chapter house

The chapter house is the very image of the Norman Gothic style. Since it was founded in 1157, it has preserved its former state. It measures only 16 meters and yet it contains many unique statues of their kind.

The Benedictine Abbey

The Benedictine abbey and the abbey domain complete the ensemble. The last, in particular, extends over several hectares.

No need to pay the entrance to the gardens, the geocache is located outside the gardens.

There are car parks all over the village, one of which is right outside the entrance of the abbey, if there are really no more places, go in front of the town hall and the school or in front of the football fields (again car parks!)
