Geocache Description:

The Canadian Red Cross first began their swimming instruction program in 1946 to reduce deaths from drowning, especially in rural areas with few water safety resources available. In 1981 a revised program launched called the Pupil Training Program, which consisted of 8 levels. Successful completion of each level earned you a coloured badge, beginning with yellow, and progressing to orange, red, maroon, blue, green, grey, and finally white. The colour badge program ended in 1996 with the introduction of the AquaQuest program, which included 12 numbered levels.

As a child who spent their summers at Brereton Lake, I learned how to swim at this very beach. Lessons were held rain or shine, and conditions were much less favourable than the swimming pools that many children practice in. I remember Grandma waiting with an armload of fluffy towels to wrap me in as I sprinted out of the crashing waves, teeth chattering. I completed my first level (yellow) when I was 6 years old, and my last when I was 11 (level 6). Despite whizzing through most of my levels, I failed level 7 three times due to being unable to perfect the whip kick (required for breaststroke in level 8). If you look just north, you will see the checkered boat house that we were made to swim to from the end of the public dock, back and forth to complete our distance swims on test day.
