Il 27 luglio del 1902, per celebrare la chiusura dell’Esposizione Internazionale dell’Automobile e del Ciclo tenutasi a Torino nel 1902, venne ideata e inaugurata una gara automobilistica di velocità in salita. Il percorso congiungeva la città di Susa con il colle del Moncenisio, al confine con la Francia, e misurava 22.500 metri, con partenza alle porte di Susa, ai piedi della salita, ed arrivo sul rettilineo precedente l’Ospizio, subito dopo la “scala” detta della Gran Croce.

Una prova massacrante per i mezzi dell’epoca ed i concorrenti che si presentarono comunque numerosi al via della gara. Le caratteristiche della cronoscalata sono: dislivello complessivo di 1.605 metri con pendenze medie del 10% e punte massime superiori al 13%.

Tra una guerra e l'altra, tra tumulti e rivolte, la gara è stata più volte sospesa e, ad oggi, viene regolarmente percorsa da molti piloti nei primi 1o giorni di giugno.
