Geocache Description:

Alongside Seonaidh Jamieson, a Project Officer for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, I have placed a couple of caches within Judy Woods.   Seonaidh kindly provided the information of the wildlife and the area.

YWT have been working in Judy Woods to improve the water quality of Clifton Beck as it runs from its headwaters in Shelf down towards its confluence with the River Calder in Brighouse. Many of the techniques used to improve water quality can also be used as part of Natural Flood Management (NFM), one such technique is the use of leaky dams.

Leaky dams are just what they say on the tin. They are woody structures designed to slow the flow of water through a given area without preventing it running completely. Faster water carries more fine sediment, so slowing the flow encourages more sediment to drop out of suspension instead of flowing down and filling in gaps in gravelly soils below. Gravelly riverbeds are vital habitat used by invertebrates and fish.

Slowing the flow of water in the upper reaches of a river catchment can help reduce the impacts of high rain fall downstream. By holding a proportion of the rainfall further up in the catchment leaky dams can work to help reduce the overall peak of high flow events. Individually they make a small difference, so are best used in conjunction with other Natural Flood Management techniques.

You are looking for a micro cache, camouflaged in natural material.

Many thanks to Bradford City Council and Seonaidh Jamieson of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust for permission to place these caches.
