Back in 2016, I noticed the new trail construction, and I was very excited at the possibility of a new Calero extension. Fast forward two years, and I was even more excited to finally arrive at the area I had spotted two years earlier, coming from the newly opened Rancho San Vicente side. From this point, you look out into the valley that separates the new section from the old section, and you get an amazing view of trails running every direction.
You're looking for a simple camo'd pill bottle a short distance off the trail on the uphill side. When you get to the gate, look uphill for the big tree and head up there. It's a great spot to sit and enjoy the view. It's about a 4-mile hike to this point from the from the Rancho San Vicente parking lot. It looks a little shorter from the main Calero parking lot, but then you'll miss the new trails.
