VIOLA DA TERRA
O surgimento da Viola da Terra encontra-se de certo modo relacionada o aparecimento da viola portuguesa ou “guitarra” trazida para as ilhas dos Açores pelo continente português.
Com um som e uma estrutura característica, com o passar do tempo e através da imaginação de várias gerações de construtores, a viola da terra foi alterando as suas características originais até hoje. A viola da terra distingue-se por dois estilos: terceirense e micaelense.
A Viola da Terra Micaelense é típica da Ilha de São Miguel, nos Açores. O seu comprimento é de cerca de 87 cm. A boca geralmente tem a abertura com a forma de dois corações. Segundo a explicação popular, estes dois corações (com as pontas em sentidos opostos) representam o amor entre duas pessoas que se separam fisicamente, ficando ligadas pelo mesmo sentimento que é a saudade. A cabeça geralmente é plana, ligeiramente inclinada em relação ao braço, e com uma forma retangular, com cravelhas. Possui 5 ordens de cordas: as três ordens mais agudas são duplas e estão afinadas em uníssono, as duas ordens mais graves são triplas e estão afinadas em oitava (de mais agudo a mais grave): Ré4, Si3, Sol3, Ré3 e Lá2.
A Viola da Terra Terceirense é típica da Ilha Terceira, também nos Açores. A nível de comprimento é igual à viola micaelense, mas a boca tem a abertura circular. Neste caso, as duas ordens mais agudas são duplas e estão afinadas em uníssono, as três ordens mais graves são triplas e estão afinadas em oitava. Tem geralmente a afinação de Mi4, Si3, Sol3, Ré3 e Lá2.
A Viola da Terra assumiu, ao longo do tempo, grande importância social e cultural na vida dos açorianos, marcando presença em diversas manifestações festivas tradicionais, para acompanhar melodias. Esta pode encontrar-se em quase todas as ilhas do arquipélago, variando por diferenças de construção, encordoamento, afinação e técnica de execução.

The emergence of Viola da Terra is in some way related to the appearance of the Portuguese Viola or "guitar" brought to the Azores by the Portuguese continent.
With a characteristic sound and structure, over time and through the imagination of several generations of builders, the viola of the earth has changed its original characteristics to this day. The viola of the land is distinguished by two styles: tercerirense and micaelense.
The Viola da Terra Micaelense is typical of the Island of São Miguel, in the Azores. Its length is about 87 cm. The mouth usually has the opening in the shape of two hearts. According to the popular explanation, these two hearts (with the ends in opposite directions) represent the love between two people who separate themselves physically, being bound by the same feeling that is the saudade. The head is usually flat, slightly inclined relative to the arm, and with a rectangular shape, with pegs. It has 5 orders of strings: the three highest orders are double and are tuned in unison, the two most serious orders are triples and are tuned in octave (from highest to lowest): D4, B3, G3, D3 and A2.
The Viola da Terra Terceirense is typical of Terceira Island, also in the Azores. The length level is equal to the Micaelense viola, but the mouth has the circular aperture. In this case, the two highest orders are double and are tuned in unison, the three most serious orders are triple and are tuned in octave. It usually has the addition of E4, B3, G3, D3 and A2.
The Viola da Terra has assumed, over time, great social and cultural importance in the life of the Azoreans, marking presence in diverse traditional festive manifestations, to accompany melodies. This can be found in almost all the islands of the archipelago, varying by differences of construction, stranding, tuning and technique of execution.
