Geocache Description:

This cache container was originally used as the final for GC1DFD8 so I think of it as the spiritual successor to that cache.

Well, surely by now you know the legend. It's been told many a time over the years. The legend of what took place all those years ago in a little town known as Dead Man's Flats? The legend of how Francois Marret and his brother Jean had a little "squabble" over a game of cards down at the old saloon? Well, y'all take a minute and refresh your memory if need be -- I'll wait.

Many mysteries remain. No one really knows what became of ol' Francois after that night. Disappeared like a thief in the night, is my guess. And, Slippery Jim J.? Well, the man, the myth, the legend -- he's been rumoured to be seen now and then but it sounds like he's spendin' more time fishin' than playing cards or Geocaching now-a-days.

As for Grandpappy? Well, my dear ol' Grandpappy had to move away from Dead Man's Flats. Oh, he lasted a good six years or so after that tragic night before the floods came and washed away part of his home. He bounced around a bit from place to place, but never found 'imself a "right proper home" as he used to say. Well, Grandpappy did finally settle near Chedderville for a spell, right up until the end. Now you may want to make all sorts of cheesy puns -- go right ahead, Grandpappy would have shared the belly laughs with you; he was that kind of good hearted soul.

Well, if you made it this far through my story, I may as well let you in on a secret. When the time finally came to lay ol' Grandpappy to rest, the stigma of that night stuck to him. They didn't want him buried at the little Chedderville church with the "decent folk" as the locals say. No, we had to put Grandpappy outside the manicured lawns and out in the trees where only his dearest family and friends know where to go to visit him. And, my friends, now you know where to find him too.

And maybe -- just maybe -- old Slippery Jim J might pop by one day and visit his old card playing friend too.
