The S&UR series is made of 8 easy-to-find traditional caches hidden what remains of the old line of the Staffordshire & Uttoxeter Railway in Stafford. Each cache gives you a bit of the history of the entire line. If you are a ‘beginner’ geocacher also look out for two “EarthCaches” nearby to #1 and #6, which don’t always show up on beginners’ phone apps.
S&UR History, Part Eight
After the war public freight services resumed until nationalisation in 1948, when the line became part of British Railways Eastern Region, and then (more logically) the Midland Region in 1950.
The line finally closed to all traffic, apart from the Air Ministry sidings, in 1951 and the stations were closed and the bulk of the signalling removed in 1953. The last train on the line was in 1957, a special organised by the Stephenson Locomotive Society. The track was lifted between 1957 and 1962. The military line continued in operation until 1975.
The Isabel Trail was then opened along the former S&UR line, running approx 1.7 miles from Doxey Road to here (Beaconside).
