Geocache Description:

This Cache is located at the Harbour Green near the footbridge in Kerr Street!

Portrush and the Harbour areas are busy all year round but more so in the Summer Months. Tourists visit from all over the world, making this lovely Harbour Town a bussling hive of activity. Take a walk around and enjoy the fantastic scenery and why not try one of the many bars/restaurants in the area for some light refreshments!

PORTRUSH HARBOUR

This man made Harbour designed by John Rennie was completed in 1827. Built as a sheltered alternative to the nearby river port of Coleraine, the harbour had previously consisted only of the little dock seen to the right of the footbridge. Within the dock is a set of stone steps known as the "Pilgrim's Steps", believed to have been used by emigrants boarding small boats to join sailing ships bound for the "New World".

From the 1850s regular cross channel passenger steamers began to use the harbour. The Laird Line operated popular summer excursions to Portrush from Ardrossan, on the Ayrshire coast, bringing hundreds to the area. Lord Leitrim's ships also called on their way to and from ports in Donegal.

Services ceased with the outbreak of the First World War. Some of the regular ships, such as Hazel and Ganiamore, are remembered in street names in Portrush.

In addition to fishing and passenger services, the harbour was also regularly used by the local quarry for the export of stone and for a short time was a container port. A branch line ran from the railway station to the quayside.

Much of the harbour is now given over to leisure craft moorings in addition to providing a base for the RNLI. The impressive record of the RNLI and their vessels is detailed in the nearby Lifeboat Museum.

THIS CACHE

The cache is situated in a high muggle area particularly in the Summer months, so extreme care and stealth should be taken! It is not a typical Geocache container and contains only a log so BYOP! Parking is available nearby so please do not park/stop on the road.
