Geocache Description:

I should warn you that crabs are tricky little buggers so should you go looking for this geocache at the posted coordinates you might find yourself as crab bait.

We always seem to have a house full of hungry people when we are in Seaside all craving crab. There are lots of things to think about and ways to get them. I have a few suggestions below.

First and the easiest way is you can simply go to one of the places in town that sells crab, though this is not really the best way as you want it fresh right.

When you go crabbing instead of just buying them there are lots of things to think about.

You need to know when to go, the crab will feed usually on the high slack tide. The internet is a good source to search for the tide tables for your area, you will want to be actively "fishing" during this time which can vary in duration depending on the "exchange" which is how much water comes in and out before and after the high tide. A larger exchange means a shorter time to crab but also could bring more crab with it.

When you are crabbing and catch them it is important to measure the size to make sure they are legal and the correct sex, you can only keep the males.

You could go catch them yourself, you might get four or five on a good day, though depending on how many hungry friends you have that might not be enough.

You would likely need some bait, how much kind of depends on how you catch them. If you were using an attachment on the end of a fishing pole which could be a lot of fun you could use clam necks and you could need more than a few or you could get a big zero in the catching part without any bait.

You probably only need one of these attachments and about a hundred feet of line on your fishing pole to cast it out.

There are other ways to catch crab though that can be just as effective and less real-time work.

A crab pot or two or possibly even three crab rings depending on if your hungry friends are going to be part of work or just the eating part.

For this method you would want a bit different bait like fish heads, yeah that will work. But how many fish heads does a person need, this is an important question as you really don’t want too many but you need enough to put one in every pot or ring and even a couple spares just in case you start catching them fast.

Hopefully you are able to pull in at least one from each of your rings, just make sure that your don’t have a female that you have to toss back as we want to make sure there are more baby crabs to help future hungry people as there could be a need for a couple more later next time. It should go without saying you need to know the difference between male and female crabs, google can be your friend.

The other option and usually much more successful is find a friend with a boat, get in the boat and get more crab. Just be careful, you never know what your shipmates may try while the boat is bouncing and you are excited about what you just pulled in.

There are several places to try to get crab once you figure out what method you want. You can go to the North end of town and toss out your rings, pots or even those fishing line things. You could even just toss a pot over the edge of the bridge, wait for the tide exchange and go check it after and hopefully you have something waiting.

If all else fails remember you can always go to the store and buy some crab if you don’t catch any.

Congrats to eyekwilt2 for getting the crab, I mean the FTF!
