Questa è la ChBr per eccellenza del Triveneto. Visibile perfettamente anche da una delle più belle piazze d'Italia si staglia come un pugno allo stomaco tra le colline carsiche che circondano la città di Trieste, tanto da essersi guadagnato il nome di FORMAGGINO visto che dalla città ricorda la forma dei formaggini che si danno da mangiare ai bambini. La storia della sua forma (che dovrebbe ricordare una M, in quando dedicata alla vergine Maria) è travagliata e misteriosa.
La versione ufficiale è che "il santuario è stato progettato dall'architetto Antonio Guacci su schizzo del vescovo di Trieste e Capodistria Antonio Santin", da li ci sono cento elubrazioni sulla sua forma, tra il fatto che sia un voto della città di Trieste per rendere grazie alla Madonna per la liberazione, ma sembra che la scelta di un'architettura brutalista volesse ricordare le periferie delle città del blocco sovietico che vedevano produrre palazzoni in serie (ne sono esempi di richiamo vari palazzi di Trieste come il Liceo scientifico Galileo Galilei o l'ospedale Cattinara), chi dice che la struttura volesse ricordare vagamente gli ossari della prima guerra mondiale presenti lungo l'Isonzo per ricordare anche i morti della guerra, resta il fatto che la struttura è arrivata fino ai nostri giorni, resistendo anche ad un crollo nel 2007 dove poi a gran voce i triestini speravano di liberarsi del Formaggino, invece vedendo poi un massiccio lavoro di restauro per portarlo all'originale splendore.
