Geocache Description:

This cache was placed in honor of John Lance Grant (aka "Opa"), by his grandchildren. John resided locally here in Orleans for 33 years. John was a loving, thoughtful and delightfully goofy man who dedicated himself to helping others: from working in healthcare in rural Korea with the Peace Corps in the late 60's; to his work helping those with disabilities; to higher education. The lasting impact he made on the world lives on in the people who he helped and his memory. This cache serves as a physical embodiment of that - thank you for stopping by and learning about our Opa!

John was born and raised in San Diego, joined the Peace Corps in the late 60's. He trained for his Peace Corps service at Ghost Ranch in Abiqui, New Mexico and then spent 2 years in Korea. After the Peace Corps he moved to Northern NY where he lived on a farm, raised 2 boys along with some chickens and goats. The family moved to Cape Cod in 1985, first living in a small house off the town cove near the Orleans Inn, and then settling near here on Tonset Road in 1994. John loved nature and hiking and would have loved geocaching with his grandkids.

The original contents of this cache included:

  • a FTF token
  • 2 trackables, each with a unique mission to head to important places that John loved:
    • a road runner (TB7YZ92) that wants to head to Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, and
    • a Cape Cod keychain (TB7YZ9B) that would like to travel across the country and visit San Diego
  • a lucky rock
  • some tradeable SWAG placed by John's grandkids
The cache is a medium sized pelican container. This cache is on conservation land; no need to enter private property or venture too far off the designated trail. Beware of poison ivy & check yourself for ticks after hiking in this area.
