This once magnificent barn was used by the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. It was used by the students to grow vegetable gardens and raise cattle for both meat and milk to feed the residents at the school. The barn is still owned by the state. The property once used by the WVSDB has been whittled down over the years. It used to encompass the land were the WV State Police barracks, Potomac Center, Romney waste water treatment plant, old now closed Hampshire Memorial Hospital, and Hampshire County industrial park now stand. A blind gentleman by the name of Charlie Ploss attended the WVSDB as a child and after college went back to the school and taught. For years he kept his own horse at the barn and despite being blind, it was not uncommon for Charlie to be out in town riding his horse. Charlie kept his horse at the barn until he passed away just a few years ago. Sadly this large and once beautiful barn has been empty for many years and has deteriorated to a point likely beyond repair. Some efforts have been made to clean out the barn and possibly attempt to repair it but to date no significant improvements have been made and the barn continues to worsen in condition. A lot of people are concerned about the condition of the barn. It's my understanding that the Town of Romney has been in negotiations with the Deaf and Blind School to try to take over ownership so that the town can work on grants and get volunteers to clean up and restore the barn. Long term plan is to renovate it and open it as an art center. Not sure where in the process things are but we are hopeful that it all works out before it is too late.
