Ο πρώτος άθλος που του ανέθεσε στον Ηρακλή ο βασιλιάς Ευρυσθέας ήταν να εξοντώσει το λιοντάρι της Νεμέας, που ήταν ο τρόμος και ο φόβος της περιοχής.
Ο Ηρακλής έψαχνε το λιοντάρι για μέρες. Ένα βράδυ άκουσε βρυχηθμούς, και να, το λιοντάρι. Ο Ηρακλής αμέσως του έριξε με τα βέλη του. Όμως, το τομάρι του λιονταριού ήταν τόσο σκληρό που ούτε καν το έγδαραν. Τότε ο Ηρακλής όρμησε πάνω του και το χτύπησε με το ρόπαλό του, βάζοντας όλη του τη δύναμη. Το λιοντάρι ζαλίστηκε κι έτσι ο Ηρακλής κατάφερε να το ακινητοποιήσει και στη συνέχεια να του τσακίσει τον λαιμό.
Ύστερα έγδαρε το τομάρι του και το φόρεσε, βάζοντας στο κεφάλι του τη λιονταροκεφαλή.

According to mythology, near Nemea, a lion in his cave took virgins hostage. When warriors from the area came to free the virgins, on their approach the virgin turned into the lion that killed the warriors. Their bones were devoured by the lion to Hades, the god of the underworld.
As a first heroic deed, his first labour, was demanded from Herakles to destroy the Nemean lion.
Heracles closed one of the entrances to the lion's den and approached from the other entrance. As the lion's fur was absolutely invulnerable and none of his arrows could penetrate it, Hercules fainted him with a huge blow of his club, then strangled him.
Heracles skinned the lion including the lion's head. He threw himself over the fur and from then on almost invulnerably moved into all the battles that were yet to come.

Nach der Mythologie nahm in der Nähe von Nemea ein Löwe in seiner Höhle Jungfrauen als Geiseln, die dann Krieger aus der Umgebung zu befreien versuchten. Wenn sie sich der Jungfrau näherten, verwandelte diese sich in den Löwen, welcher die Krieger tötete, verschlang und dessen Knochen Hades, dem Gott der Unterwelt, übergab.
Als erste Heldentat wurde von Herakles gefordert, dass er den Nemeischen Löwen vernichtete.
Herakles verschloss einen der beiden Eingänge der Höhle des Löwen und stellte ihn durch den anderen. Da das Fell des Löwen absolut unverletzlich war und keiner seiner Pfeile dieses durchdringen konnte, versetzte Herkules ihn mit einem gewaltigen Schlag seiner Keule in Ohnmacht, um ihn dann zu erdrosseln.
Herakles zog dem Löwen das Fell samt Kopf ab. Er warf sich selbst das Fell über und zog von nun an nahezu unverwundbar in all die Kämpfe, die noch kommen sollten.
