Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache, a micro bison tube containing a log.

On August 16, 1976, one of Goffstown's most prominent and important landmarks, their covered railroad bridge, was lost. At the time the bridge was still being used for freight rail service and was the last active covered rail bridge on the Boston & Maine Railroad. The fire, reportedly started as the result of arson, burned so intensely that the paint on nearby fire trucks began to blister. Smoke from the inferno could be seen in Manchester, eight miles away. Despite there still being two rail customers stranded on the west side of the river, the B&M Railroad decided not to replace the bridge. Trains did still run on the Goffstown Branch until total abandonment in 1981 but stopped just shy of the river where the bridge formerly stood. The loss of the important icon in such a dramatic fashion is still felt in the town today.
