Geocache Description:

Fall event at a wonderful Nature Preserve – Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve on 10/27/2018.

The preserve hours are 7 A.M. to 5 P.M. but the event will start at 9 A.M. The event will be at the preserve sign-in kiosk (N 34° 37.335 W 087° 47.662) rather than at the published coordinates. At approximately 9:30 A.M., I will give a brief presentation about the preserve. Although Geocaching guidelines state that a log book is not required for the event, the preserve owners require that all visitors sign in and out at the kiosk giving them a record of visitors to the preserve.

The Preserve has more than 700 acres and has about 18 miles of hiking trails. The trails range in difficulty from easy to moderately difficult. A few areas, such as the steep trail to the Citadel can be challenging. There are currently 22 geocaches spread out over the Preserve and we will have 5 or 6 new geocaches for the event. One can have a wonderful day or two enjoying nature, hiking, and looking for the geocaches in this great Nature Preserve.

All of the caches in the Preserve were placed with permission from the owners of the Preserve.

While the owners of the Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve welcome visitors to the Preserve and have given permission for this event as well as the geocaches in the preserve, they cannot and do not give permission to access any geocache by crossing adjoining private property except as specifically indicated on the trail map.

Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve is a privately owned, protected scenic natural area located in the Little Mountains region of Colbert County, Alabama. It was founded to provide a sanctuary for native plants and animals , as well as for outdoor educational and recreational opportunities for people of the Shoals area. The preserve is open to the public year-round but only on Friday through Sunday and on holidays. There is no charge for visiting the Preserve.

In the preserve, along the hiking trails, there are picnic areas, “restrooms” (outhouses), and fresh water at the picnic areas and other locations. There are several waterfalls, beautiful bluffs, rock shelters and a multitude of flora ranging from common to rare. I have seen turkeys, snakes (including rattlesnakes), deer, armadillos and other wildlife in this beautiful preserve. There have been two Mountain Lion sightings as well. Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve is maintained as closely as possible to its natural state. Visitors are advised that this commitment to “naturalness” offers many potential hazards that must be considered in order to be safe while on the preserve. All life is protected on the preserve – this includes snakes and all other critters that one may encounter along the trails. Also, Do Not pick any flowers or damage any plants. These are protected on the preserve, also. Remember, CITO and leave no trace.

Enter this area at your risk.

Please read each cache description carefully for specific cache information and warnings.

Please use caution at all times. Always monitor children carefully. Although there is fresh water at multiple locations throughout the preserve, one should take water, snacks and lunch for the adventure. I don't recommend drinking from the streams you will encounter nor do I recommend drinking water from the Big Spring although it is probably safe. Please wear good hiking boots or shoes since the footing is precarious in many places. Most of the bad bugs will be less prevalent by the event date but insect repellent is still recommended. Please remember, “Leave only footprints and take only memories and photos”.
