This cache brings you to see Opuntia humifusa the Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus. It is a low lying succulent, found in Southwestern Ontario, and Eastern and Central United States. It has clusters of small yellow flowers in the summer and bears a small green fruit that ripens to red in the fall.
The prickly pear cactus is considered an endangered species at risk due to its naturally restricted range - found only in sandy areas close to Lake Erie shore. It is found along walking trails in nearby Point Pelee National Park.
Please respect the plants and their surroundings and this quiet neighbourhood.
This cache should be a quick park and grab - be mindful of street parking restrictions in the area in vicinity to community hospital. A waypoint is included for street parking (no charge) or you can park in adjacent parking lot ($5).
Congratulations to Barnsaw for FTF!!!
