The eight Sabbats each mark an important point in nature’s natural cycles. They are depicted as eight evenly spaced spokes on a wheel representing the year as a whole.

Mabon is the second of three Pagan harvest festivals which is celebrated around the time of the Autumn Equinox in September.

It is the time of the main harvest festival, a time for reaping all that has been sown throughout the year. In days gone by, the harvest festivals didn’t just celebrate the finished work for the season, but the capacity to survive the winter.

John Barleycorn is a British folk song that teaches – in a dark-humoured way – the process of cereal grain harvest. Barleycorn himself symbolises the harvested vegetation. He acts as a symbol of the dying god and the ritual scapegoat at the same time.

The Autumn Equinox is also a time of balance, a time when the hours of day a night are equal. It is the time to start making preparations for winter, a time for apple picking or making corn dollies and scarecrows.
