Gelt Woods is an ancient woodland once part of a much larger forest covering the whole of Northern Cumbria. Over centuries the land was cleared for farming but the gorge of the River Gelt was too steep and rocky.
Close to the river Alder and Ash trees dominate the lower slopes with Oak and Birch growing up the hillside.
Along the banks of the Gelt is a remarkable quarry believed to be Roman in origin. The stone was used to either build or repair Hadrian Wall. Along the cliff face are marks left by the quarrymen
A lovely circular path round Gelt woods popular for dog walking and kids too. This series has been set with the little ones in mind. Set with kind permission of Brampton Parish Council and Natural England as this is a SSSI.
