In the spirit of 'Short Circuit' (GC7XR5A) by CartertoniC, I thought I would try and expand on the number of great tracks and potential loops that can be completed starting at Holdsworth Lodge (at the end of Mt Holdsworth Rd).
This cache marks the location of where Murray’s Track (as known by the locals) meets the Gentle Annie track. It provides a fantastic alternative (direct) route down to the Atiwhakatu Track. Otherwise you can make your way up to the High Point 801 that marks the position of ‘Old signs on Carrington ridge’ (GC5NEPB).
The track is not an official marked DOC track but is in fantastic condition and is easily followed. You will even find the occasional cairn and piece of tape on the way to help guide you. If you are heading down to the Atiwhakatu Track, it pops out very close to ‘Bridge Over River Pig’ (GC30JC1).
History: For many years, Murray Johnston organised navigation courses in his role as a Mountain Safety Council instructor. After navigating to High Point 801, participants had to then follow a ridge down to the Atiwhakatu track. Over time, a ground trail has evolved and the track between the Atiwhakatu and Gentle Annie tracks has become a regular for many locals wanting to get off the major tracks. It has alternative names – maybe those that know more can post in the comments!
The cache is a small translucent Sistema container. It contains a logbook, pencil and a few little fun items from the kids.
