Speed River Ramble: Bridge Out! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

BeagleBrigade: Visits are few and far between it seems so time to retire this one. Not sure why the last log was a DNF as the container was right where it was intended to be...

Geocache Description:

October 7 2022: Cache has been replaced, but with a different style of hide. Hint updated. Should be findable in winter depending on conditions...

Note: After a recent incident at the gate, I confirmed with the trail hiking club that public access to the road allowance is not controlled by the quarry operator or any individual acting on behalf of the quarry. The allowance does belong to the township and access is definitely permitted.

Also be aware that the cedar bush to the west, near the river, is affiliated with a local hunt club. The area is private as well, and the Section of the Speed River Trail is closed to all during hunting season. This is clearly posted on the gate where the trail turns west near the river.

The geo-pooch and I are frequent visitors to this spot. The old road allowance is a well-used dog walking area, generally as an off-leash spot.

The property on either side is a former gravel quarry. There are signs posted a regular intervals to remind everyone to keep to the road allowance. You will likely notice that a few people ignore the signs and there are well-worn trails to the east of the road. There is no need to trespass to find this cache.

Up until a few years ago, there was an old steel bridge across the Speed River at this spot. When I first saw it, it had been closed to traffic for some time. It was still possible to dodge the barriers and make your way across on foot. Foolish, but possible. Now it is a nice spot to quietly take in the Speed River and the various waterfowl that use the area. In the spring the adjacent wetlands can be a rather noisy spot due to the Spring Peepers (also called "Chorus Frogs") coming out at the onset of breeding season.

Container should be easy to spot, not quite as easy to sign. A helpful tool is provided about 10m away. Ensure you have your own scribing device as none is provided.
