Geocache Description:


Bua Tong Waterfall is located in Mae Taeng forest, 57 km from Chiang Mai. Highway 1001 will lead you there in about an hour. Not only is this place great fun, its also one of the most unique natural features we have seen in Thailand.





The grounds are open from 8am to 5pm and entry is free. There is a picnic area at the top, a hut selling snacks and drinks, toilets and changing rooms. Eating is not allowed beyond the picnic ground.

The small, beautiful falls stands at 100 meters, sloping at an angle of 50°. It is divided into 3 levels, the first two having horizontal shelves with shallow pools of water and the last at the bottom flowing into Mae Pae stream.

This amazing waterfall is fed by Nam Phu Chet Si Spring nearby ( translates to "7 coloured well"). When the calcium rich spring emerges at the top of the hill and cascades down the side of the forest slope, the supersaturated water comes into contact with air. The exposure to air causes the carbon dioxide to leave the water, releasing dissolved minerals or precipitating the calcium carbonate on the surfaces it flows over on its way down. An unusual feature of calcium carbonate being more insoluble with increasing temperature - in this instance the heat from the sun, further accelerates its precipitation resulting in the creamy white bulbous boulders you find at Bua Tong.

The quality of carbonates being porous, soft and brittle is what gives the boulders their grippy and climable feature. It allows you to walk upwards into gushing clear water. This also means that the white coating can be damaged when stressed or scratched, creating a white residue. ( Note that writing on the rocks is strictly prohibited. )

Tasks to log:
1. There is algae growth in some areas (and scratch marks to remove them). Do you observe the water flow over these patches to be greater or less than the rest of the falls.

2. At level 2, there is a little cave like niche where moss and plants grow. The calcium rich water drips down the vertical surface inside of the niche. Would you describe the precipitation created by the water as:
a. Smooth and slick
b. Wavy and scale like
c. Circular with tiny bubble shapes

3. Look for dead leaves and plant debris at the edges of the shallow pools by the waterfall. Describe the appearance and texture of these and suggest a reason why they are such.
