This series of caches will tell you about different community orchestras in the SF Bay Area. Each of these caches will also have a clue in it, the name of a composer. Collect all the composer names to get the coordinates for a bonus cache. The bonus cache, or Community Orchestra Series Final, is GC81X7C.
The sixth cache in this series highlights the San Jose Chamber Orchestra (SJCO) and its associated youth orchestra, the San Jose Youth Chamber Orchestra (SJYCO). The San José Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1991 out of the desire of local musicians for an opportunity to play chamber orchestra repertoire and explore music written by living composers. It is a professional string-based ensemble of 19+ players, and presents a series of 7–9 programs per season. It is conducted by Barbara Day Turner.
The San Jose Youth Chamber Orchestra program is designed to equip young players with the skills needed for excellent performance, as well as instill disciplines useful in all areas of life and foster a wider appreciation of the arts. The SJYCO gives students opportunities to work directly with professionals who coach sectional rehearsals, and through the annual “Side-by-Side” concerts, where the senior orchestra performs side-by-side with the members of the professional orchestra and the younger groups perform side-by-side with the seniors.
The SJYCO rehearses at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church here in Saratoga.
