Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.

This is the forty-second in the series and starts at the delightful St. Peter's church in the hamlet of Newchurch close to Devauden. The co-ords are for the church gate where there is room for one car. Best not do this after dark as you are very close to houses.

The church itself is set back from the road in it's own walled patch of land so you will have to walk up the little to reach it.

The building is built in a Gothic Early English style with a small intergrated tower in a slightly elevated position, with the earliest parts being the tower and porch (probably medieval) - the rest being Victorian - but undoubtedly built on top of an older medieval construction or possibly Norman as the font is from that era. The tower has a blocked entrance which suggests it may have been seperate originally as many were.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answers to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom. So here we go:

There is a little plaque to the left of the gate by the road ("this gate was presented by...."? What day in June did Harry die? This is A

Have a look at the blocked arch-shaped door in the (west end of the) tower. How many blocks make up the main arch-part of the door ’frame’ (ie the angled parts not the vertical parts)? This is B

Look up the tower above the blocked doorway - how many blocked windows are there? This is C

Continue round the church and you will see the unusual chimney, but how many sides does it have? This is D

You will notice several traditional ventilation bricks close to ground level as you walk around. How many holes does each have? This will be your number for E

So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° 40.D(B+C)E W 002° 47.BDA

You are looking for a 35mm filmpot type container.
