Geocache Description:

Welcome to the HD JP Memorial Caches. All caches with a title beginning HD JP-- have been placed in honor of our good friend Larry who was a geocaching genius. His 61,825 finds stand as an inspiration to us all! HD JP was known for the quality and professionalism of his more than 150 hides, and we aim to reflect his values in our memorial to him.

Larry died on October 3, 2018 following a heart attack. At the time of his death, Larry was the leading cacher (in terms of finds) in Virginia with 61,825 caches, making him 54th in the world. He also placed 40 individual caches, hosted 3 events, and was the sparkplug that brought the Tobacco Heritage Trail geoart (with 100+ caches) into existence.

Amazing statistics aside, Larry was a dear, beloved member of the caching community throughout Virginia and beyond. He loved to cache with others, was very generous with his time, and passionate about caching.

I have memories of Larry giving me a personal tour of his caches in Victoria, VA; of showing up on my doorstep in Virginia Beach with caching buddy Silvertop to find the cache in my front yard; of getting phone calls from him about caches I'd found & vice versa; and his presence at, and constant support of the annual Virginia Rallies in Pocohontas State Park. To me he was the epitome of what's the very finest in geocaching. He will be greatly missed by me and many others.

From his obituary: “Larry” (70) of Victoria, Va. died on October 3, 2018. He graduated from Virginia Tech and the School of Hospital Administration at the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the Navy as a commissioned officer with appointments as an instructor at the Naval School of Healthcare Administration in Bethesda, MD, the Executive Officer and subsequently Commanding Officer, Second Medical Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC; Executive Assistant to the Medical Officer of the Marine Corps, Headquarters, United State Marine Corps, Washington, DC; Medical Planning officer at Headquarters, Fleet Marine Forces, Pacific, Camp Smith, Hawaii. He assumed command of the Naval Medical Clinic, Quantico, Va., in 1994 until November 1996 when he became the Commanding Officer at Field Medical Service School, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He retired as a Captain in February 2001 at Camp Lejeune and returned to live in Victoria.
