In July 2018 wildfires on Bray Head uncovered an ‘Eire’ sign made of rocks which dates back to World War 2. The sign had been covered by thick vegetation for many years. Between 1942 and 1943, large signs were placed across the Irish coastline (85 in all) by the Coast Watching Service to act as navigational aids for pilots because of the huge volume of planes – such as American bombers – crossing over the island. The signs also served to inform all aircraft that they were crossing over a neutral country. The designated number for the Bray Head sign was 8, the number is clearly visible on top of the Eire sign. The sign was originally whitewashed to make it more visible from the air, and is now being restored to its original condition.
NB: THE CACHE IS ALMOST 50 METRES FROM THE SIGN, PLEASE DO NOT MOVE ANY ROCKS ON THE EIRE SIGN, NUMBER OR BORDER.
