An easy cache in a very popular location. The construction of the harbour at Seaham (formerly known as the North Dock) began in 1828 and was completed in 1831. It was created and owned by the Marquess of Londonderry to facilitate the shipment of coal from his East Durham coalmines. After the demise of the pits and the decline of the fishing industry through the 1990’s the harbour fell into a semi derelict state. Over the last 20 years we have worked hard to bring about the regeneration of the area and to bring economic life back to the North Dock. This includes the creation of the flagship ‘Waterside’ building comprising of 12 commercial units, the construction of a marina using floating pontoons to accommodate up to 96 leisure craft, the re-instatement of the dock gates and improved public access to areas of the North Dock. More recently we have added an Activity Centre offering a variety of water sports activities. On a fine day, bring your swimwear to enjoy our beautiful beach and look at the lovely boats in the Marina. Perfect for a family day out. Enjoy your visit.
