Geocache Description:

This event is to celebrate my significant birthday. To be held in the Beer Engine public house in Newton St Cyres, between 12 and 3 PM. You may be aware that I am a bit of a train buff and so this is as close as I can get to the railway and is a venue not used for geocaching before. They also brew their own ales on site and it is possible to see this in operation. PLEASE CAN YOU LET ME KNOW IF YOU REQUIRE FOOD, SO I CAN LET THE PUB KNOW. Thanks. For more info and menus etc. go to http://thebeerengine.co.uk

Opened by the Exeter and Crediton Railway company on 12 May 1851, this station was simply known as St. Cyres until WW1. It suffered the disadvantage of being located almost a mile from the main village. Until the mid-20th century, Newton St. Cyres was among the prettiest of Devon villages, with two rows of 16th and 17th century thatched cottages tightly bordering the main road. After World War II, the increase in road traffic led to severe congestion along the narrow main street and, after a prolonged public battle, the entire row of cottages along the south side of the street was demolished; in the opinion of many, this was an act of public vandalism. Should you wish to travel to this event by rail, do check timetables on GWR's website as the service is infrequent!
