Sculptor Oskari Jauhiainen and Architect Eero Eerikäinen designed this concrete memorial in 1968 to commemorate Finnish seafarers. A perpetual flame burns on top of the monument. The memorial also includes a bronze compass with the inscription "Suomen merenkulkijoille Finlands sjöfarare MCMMLXVIII" - In Memory of Finnish Seafarers, 1968.
In 1984, the Finnish Seamen's Mission revealed a copper plaque, designed by Oskari Jauhiainen, commemorating sailors who drowned when M/S Malmi sank on the Baltic Sea on 17 December 1979.
The work belongs to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
