Geocache Description:

This Multi Cache is located in the Red Car Greenbelt. It is a new public park in the old Pacific Electric Right of Way where the Red Car Trolley line ran to Los Angeles in the first half of the last century. It sat as vacant land after the demise of the Trolley system although was part of a hotbed of controversy in the 1960's as part of the path of the proposed Crosstown freeway. This Long Beach stretch was one portion of a proposed freeway to run from Costa Mesa to Ventura but was met with uproar in several cities including Long Beach. I attended a packed public meeting about the project in the Wilson Auditorium where the opposition was fierce. The Long Beach portion was going to run from the west along Anaheim until it hit Redondo where it was planned to traverse down the Pacific Electric Right of Way, sweep around the Lagoon and through the current site of the Greek Church back up to the Garden Grove and San Diego freeways. Cities began dropping out of the proposed route in the early 1970's with the Long Beach portion officially killed in 1972 by Governor Ronald Reagan. Now you'll see the path used by Wilson High students, bicyclists, scooters and dog walkers as it winds from Wilson down to the Lagoon. Bring your own pen - room for small trades.
