--- On Monday, an eccentric millionaire gave her lazy nephew a challenge: if he applied himself to build a brick house by Saturday, he would get $100,000. But the house had to be built exactly according to the millionaire's blueprint, and the nephew had to use every single brick he purchased - if he left any on the lot, or if he or any of his coworkers hid or threw any away, he would get nothing. The nephew, sensing easy money, agreed in a heartbeat.
On Tuesday, the nephew called some of his friends to help build the house, promising them a cut of the prize. He also went to the hardware store to buy bricks. Hearing that they were sold only in lots of 100, the nephew took a quick look at the blueprint and bought ten lots - a total of 1,000 bricks.
On Wednesday, the nephew and his friends gathered at the lot and started building the house. His laziest friend arrived late, carrying an old-fashioned, and spent more time reading the blueprint than helping build the house. The nephew asked the friend what he was doing, and the friend said "I don't think we're going to be using all of those bricks." But the nephew just shrugged, figuring they would deal with that if and when it came up.
On Thursday, the nephew and his friends kept building the house. Again, the laziest friend showed up late, carrying a Spotted Cow, and spent more time with the blueprint than with helping to build. The nephew, exasperated, demanded his friend help build the house. But the friend kept looking at the blueprint instead and staring off into space, thinking deeply.
On Friday, the nephew and his friends finished the house. But they'd used exactly 999 of the bricks... one brick was left over. They gathered around, staring forlorn at the extra brick, knowing the millionaire would be arriving tomorrow to inspect their work. That's when the lazy friend arrived, carrying - not a drink this time - but instead a bucket of purple paint. "Don't worry," he told the nephew, "I figured out what to do." He then painted the brick and left it on the lot, assuring everyone their problem would soon be solved.
On Saturday, the nephew and his friends arrived at the house. And to their joy, the brick was gone.
