Number 1219 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.
The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.
The starting coordinates take you to a small area of public amenity ground lying between Meggetland Sports Ground and Northcare Manor, an elderly care home which was opened in 2018 with special facilities for dementia sufferers. From here you can admire the 'fine pair' through the perimeter fence of their lovely garden, and if you walk around the other side of the building, you can also admire their quirky 'retro' garden ornaments. There are even some animals in a mini-zoo: pigs, chickens and rabbits to see. There is a short walking trail with distances displayed in metres along the route. If you are here at the weekend, you will be sure to see some hockey, rugby or football going on; and you can sometimes hear the fans singing at Murrayfield. On the day of placing the cache we heard the Hearts fans in full voice, warming up for the semifinal against Celtic at Murrayfield. We could also smell that unmistakable aroma from the brewery.
To find where the cache is hidden: you should walk the route (or run, or toddle, and I'm pretty sure it can be done in a wheelchair if you want to. Even Peedieduchess can do it!).
As you go, count the yellow markers, and observe the distances on them.
The cache can be found at:
N 55º55.NORTHINGS W 003º14.WESTINGS
NORTHINGS = marker 6 + marker 9 + marker 11
WESTINGS = marker 4 + marker 7 + marker 10 + the number of yellow markers
Please use maximum stealth! This is a busy shortcut path for commuters going to and from Slateford Station.
The Fine Pair series was originally started by wizardsmum but is now managed by mattd2k
If anybody would like to place 'A Fine Pair' of their own please do. I would just ask that you first visit www.afinepair.co.uk to request a number to avoid any duplication
mattd2k also keeps a public Bookmark List of this series. Once your cache is published please contact him via firstname.lastname@example.org to have yours added
