Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed with the help of my grand daughter as part of her Girl Guide badge scheme and kind permission from the Park Ranger at HafanYMor Holiday Park and all information below was kindly supplied by him.

Local parking is available either off the Chwilog roundabout, down Penychain past the train station or towards Abererch Sands, but please be courtious to local residents and any farm animals.

The Coastal Path can be followed along the headland without entering the holiday park. The views are amazing and very often seals can be spotted off the headland and if you are really lucky, dolphins. Across Cardigan Bay you can see Criccieth Castle, Snowdon range, Harlech Castle and Barmouth.

HafanYMor Holiday Park was one of many naval bases built by Billy Butlin during World War II, as training camps, this being named as HMS Glendower,  The Duke of Edinburgh completed his naval training at this camp, one of the others was in Skegness, HMS King Arthur. His idea was, once they were no longer needed when the war ended, he would turn them into Holiday Camps, hence BUTLINS.

As you carry on walking along the Coastal Path you will come across a number of pretty coves and approximately 100 yards off the Headland is the wreck of The Mary Jane, a ship carrying slates from Porthmadog to roof factories in Liverpool. Sadly it ran aground in a storm in October 1868 and broke up, leaving a large heel of roofing slates in the sand.

You will also come across brick bases and concrete blocks, the larger ones were to support huge Destroyer type guns with a range of 5 miles and aimed toward Tudwals Islands that you see out towards the SW. A brick building was used for the training sailors to sleep in between shifts.

The Hut Circle on the top of the headland was built by The Park Ranger of HafanYMor and is based on designs of around 3,000 years ago to shelter communities of the area. The foundations are actually part of the Sea Defences used when the naval training camp was open. When he first built it the hut was completely covered with grass, branches & reeds, sadly it was burnt down by someone. It is quite a sight and a lot of hard work went into originally and even more when he rebuilt it with help from owner's from HafanYMor. When over in Barmouth or Harlech, on a clear day, you can actually see it.

If you carry on along the Coastal Path you will get to Criccieth or Pwlhelli, dependant upon which direction you are going.

Enjoy the walk. Please take care with pets and children as you do walk along the headland and some parts do go near the edge.
